BEHIND THE WHEEL

My work is a constant reminder that I am a student, learning a process that would take several lifetimes to master.  Each set of work I produce reflects what I've learned and is a reminder of my constant progress.  Maybe that is why I am so fascinated with pottery.

Pottery is not simply a collection of functional forms, or even a pretty piece.  It incoorporates both the functional and aesthetically pleasing -  that is what is so challenging and beautiful.

I am influenced by the long tradition of craftsmanship of Japanese  pottery from the beautiful delicate Arita porcelain to the rough yet refined Raku stoneware. My pieces are usually thrown with textured stoneware fired to a cone 10 in reduction.  This produces deep tones and rich colors through the glazes.

Each piece is designed to be comfortable to hold in the hands, form to the lips, and is proportional to itself.  My joy comes from knowing that my work is enjoyed and used as an every day part of living.
